The term pin-up can refer to photographs, drawings, paintings, and other illustrations done in emulation of photos. The term was first used in 1941, but the practice has been around since the late 1800s. (actually it’s been evolving since hieroglyphics!)
Many pin-ups were photographs of celebrity sex symbols. One of the most popular pin-up girls of the 1940s was Betty Grable. Her poster kept a watch over our soldiers in World War II. Other pin-ups were artwork of idealized and beautiful women. An early example was the Gibson girl, by Charles Dana Gibson.
The pin-up could be cut out of magazines or newspapers, some were postcards or chromo-lithographs, etc. Photos would often appear on calendars, which are meant to be pinned up, and so the name. Posters of pin-up girls were eventually mass-produced.
