Following the war, there was a tremendous shortage of housing.  After that the push was on to create/develop new communities.  Tract housing went up almost overnight, and the suburbs were created.  Rows and rows of homes were built on what used to be woods or farmland. Was anyone in your family affected either by the lack of housing after the war, or did they move into one of the newer created communities?

My parents were lucky enough to move into a brand new housing estate and, for the first time, my mum had an electric washing machine and we had an indoor bathroom for the first time.

I don't really know. We lived with my grandparents for a while when we moved to the farm and then Dad rented a house. I don't think we really had a housing shortage in my area. Of course we were in the country.

My grandparents moved in to what was a two room house. They then built on the additions. Around them houses started going up all over the place until it was suburbia.
