My grandfather was telling me that he was adopted in the 1940s. He would love to find out some information about his biological family. Is there any information available out there that might help him if he has the names? What documents from that time period should he be looking for?

There may well still be records but of course it will depend on where he lived and whether there was serious bombing because a lot of records were destroyed during the war. I'd go back to the town where he was adopted and start with the local authority to see what they have.

If his records are still available I think FlorrieMay may have the best advice. I would check courthouse records too, just in case he was born in town and was registered as such. You may not be able to find anything but I wish you well in your search.

Apparently he was born in San Francisco. He told me that his biological mother had an affair with a married man but they lost track after an earthquake. She put him up for adoption and he was quickly adopted by a couple. His bio mom died soon after that. I never knew the full story until now but I'm finding it really interesting.
