I admit, I'm prejudiced because this is the first film I can ever remember seeing but I think Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life" was one of the most influential films of the 40's. What other films would you nominate?

This is a tough one.

The Bicycle Thief is one I would recommend because it showed truth and grittiness that other films didn't.

I would also nominate Casablanca and Citizen Kane. Both films have been great inspirations for many of today's filmmakers.

You have picked some of the all time classics!  I would like to add to this list The Maltese Falcon.  This was a mystery that really helped to set and define the standard for the mysteries that followed.  It was truly a benchmark!  I also love It Is A Wonderful Life.  The amazing thing is that back in the 1940's this movie received poor ratings and was not well received by the audiences of the time.  Perphaps it was a movie ahead of its time.  But either way, the holidays would never be the same without it!
