I absolutely think the most fashionable clothes of the 1940s were military uniforms! I remember walking around the street as a child, going to the candy store, going to get a newspaper, or going to the market, and seeing a soldier or a guard wearing the polished German uniforms. I know it was similar in the USA, seeing soldiers home on leave in their beautiful uniforms. We saved my father's old uniform, just because of its beauty.

One of my uncles was a part of the US Army back then. He was able  to keep his Khaki shirt and wool pants. They're now memorabilia – sort of a connection with his past. Items like these are rich with memories and story.

My dad was a sailor and I loved to see him in his uniform though I'm sure that he didn't get as much pleasure from wearing it because, to him, it meant fighting in the war and reminded him of the horrors he saw.
