Offline. Are there any other people here that are sort of trying to bring
some of the old things back? Has anyone experienced something like the
old community feeling?I am looking forward to chatting with people here. Perhaps I'm not as
strange as I thought. I truly love the 1940's. I love the movies, I
love the clothing, I love the music, I love the art, I love the dancing.
There was a quality to people then that I don't think we have now.
Something about growing up in the depression where you had to sacrifice
and band together in community to survive and then to jump into WWII and
do something similar. It truly was the greatest generation. I ache
for the losses our society has taken. We move all over and we don't
have the same sense of community. Instead of front porches and
conversations we don't know our neighbors. My friend from Belarus said
her first impression of Americans was that we were sloppy. Taking care
to be presentable to go somewhere makes me feel more civilized and it's easier to act more politely than if I go to the store in my jammies. Maybe I'm odd…
Men used to wear suits and hats and open doors for ladies. Cussing in
front of ladies was a no-no (I was at an outdoor event a couple years
ago with my husband and there were 20 something young guys dropping the
f-bomb like there was no tomorrow). Women's fashion was elegant and
becoming while a lot more practicle than bustles and such. So, I've
been feeling like a lonely anachronistic anomaly. I buy old patterns
and old hats (I wear them too which can get some funny looks). Does anyone here dress sort of like the forties for everyday or is it just for swing dancing and such?
P.S. I posted this in a different section earlier. I think it was in the wrong location.
