It would be interesting to know what everyone thinks of the hairstyles of the 40's. I've been looking at some images and I see a lot of curls and rolls. The 'Victory Rolls' were very common among the ladies. Hair on each side is rolled up so that both rolls meet on top of the head. I think the hairstyles of the 1940's had a very neat and feminine look.

I agree, they were very feminine and my mum always had her hair in curlers! I recall having rags put in my hair every night and painfully pulled out the next day to make my hair hang in ringlets.

I long to have hair that curls up like some of the ladies I see in films and pictures. My hair is just not the type that can hold all those curls, no matter what I do or how much hairspray I add. I don't know how they did it! The ringlets are beautiful though.

Men and boys always had their hair slicked back wiith "Vitalis". It was THE hair care product for men for many, many years and I remember using it quite well. Sometimes I wish I still could use it to keep my hair under control. It's a good memory for me.

Women always had their hair in curls back then in my memory. Men also kept their hair very clean back then. There was no hair flying all over the place. Men were respectable individuals!

I agree…1940's hairstyles always looked so polished and classy, yet somehow they seemed so effortless, too.  Personally, I don't think today's hairstyles lend themselves to a fashionable look at all, and I prefer to see a man with very clean and well-groomed hair.  As for us ladies, it's easy to acheive that '40's elegance with a bit of setting lotion and curlers or hot rollers.  You can either wear your style up in those more structured "victory rolls", or down in a cascading style à la Veronica Lake.  For a bit of natural elegance (and with summer just around the corner!), pin your hair up on one side and attach a flower.

I think the ladies of the 40s were something special. I have tried and treid and tried to do victory rolls but my hair hates me! Anymore I just like to look at the pictures and admire the ladies.
